About Matamata
In Māori, Matamata means ‘headland’, name of the pa of Ngāti Hauā chief, Te Waharoa. Established in 1830 on a high ridge projecting into the valley of Waitoa River, it sat near the town of present-day Waharoa.
Today, Matamata is a sought-after location within a triangle pointed by Hamilton, Cambridge and Tauranga. A comfortable two-hour drive to Auckland, it’s an easy drive south to the central lakes and skiing and north to the wilderness of Coromandel.
A growing town of 9000 people, Matamata is renowned for its town and country vibe. A vibrant bloodstock and racing industry, thriving farming, parks and tree-lined boulevards. Newcomers seek the high quality of life here. Even with all the amenities of much larger towns, Matamata retains the charm and village appeal of a friendly rural community. Good schooling, restaurants and cafes, shops and entertainment. The capital of Hobbiton, Matamata is the best not just ‘both’ worlds; it’s the best of ‘every’ world.
Come and visit Highgrove and feel the magic of Matamata for yourself.
